We can introduce and/or expand your knowledge of navigation, showing how to read and use a map, compass, and GPS.

Navigation is critical for all outdoor activities - looking to hike up a trailless peak, or get to a route that is way out there? Haven't used a compass in a while? This clinic will introduce you to the old world of maps & compasses and the new age of GPS. Learn how to read and use all the different navigational aids as well as make a route plan and be better prepared for your next adventure.

We can cover a variety of skills:

Basic skills:
      • Map reading
      • Compass use

More advanced skills:
      • UTM readers/grids
      • GPS use and programming
      • Computer mapping software
      • Making a route plan to get you in and out from your designation

Bringing your own compass and/or GPS is recommended to help you gain familiarity with it - however if you don't own any yet, we have some available for loan and can help you with things to look for when purchasing one.

Navigation can require the use of a: map, compass, GPS, UTM grid reader, computer and mapping software, calculator, map wheel, pencil, and pocket notebook.
