Rock Climbing in Connecticut has a long and important history. Some of America's most influential climbers have tasted the steep and bold climbs that grace the many basalt crags strewn across the state. Climbers from the Yale Mountaineering Club have used CT's outcrops to train for climbs in the greater ranges since the 1920's and in the 1930's Fritz Wiesner climbed several lines that were perhaps the most difficult in the country at the time. Climbers like Layton Kor and Henry Barber visited in the 60's and 70's and put up new and difficult lines.

Ragged Mountain in Southington (approx 25 minutes from West Hartford) is perhaps CT's finest area. Dozens of excellent routes routes grace the "Main Face" as well as several smaller, excellent crags in the forest nearby. These routes are always steep, challenging for their grades and traditionally protected.

Some of the classics are; Broadway, YMC, Knights Move, Carey Corner, The Ragged Edge, Unconquerable Crack, Subline and many others.
